-- During the First World War, French boxcars carried American Doughboys to the front. These wartime boxcars, which held 40 men or 8 horses, were emblazoned with a “40/8”; a symbol readily understood by American veterans of that era.
Through this program, the 40/8 provides financial assistance in the form of grants to individual athletes or teams who lack the funds required to attend and participate in amateur sports programs.
WHAT IS THE 40 & 8? La Société des Quarante Hommes et Huit Chevaux (The Society of Forty Men and Eight Horses), is an independent, invitation only, honor society of American veterans and service members; more commonly known as The Forty and Eight.
While volunteering at the local VFW post in 2017, his sponsor introduced him to the 40&8, which rapidly became his passion. Service to the community and organization of La Societe provides the comradeship that he’s missed since departing the military in 2007.
The numerals 40/8 will be on the right, and the title of office centered across the front. Past Grande Voiture officers may wear the blue chapeau with white piping and lettering, and the title of office will be centered across the front with the year in office thereafter.
La Societe des Quarante Hommes et Huit Chevaux otherwise known as The Society of 40 Men and 8 Horses was founded in 1920 by Joseph W. Breen at American Legion Post 297 in Philadelphia, PA.
